Both in education and other common efforts for the nation, there seems to be little notion of shared sacrifice. In the case of education, there is both the moral imperative and a definite economic one that shows that, in an information economy, education is the best investment.

BobBobnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1982730621860282013.post-83149545083707625962010-12-23T08:19:32.807-05:002010-12-23T08:19:32.807-05:00Thanks for highlighting the wealth disparities. Low wealth translates into no safety net to see families through temporary down turns, no savings for college, etc., all the things that perpetuate intergenerational cycles of poverty.AEBnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1982730621860282013.post-69977361227022308152010-12-20T16:54:32.615-05:002010-12-20T16:54:32.615-05:00When I was living in Nicaragua during the eighties...When I was living in Nicaragua during the eighties, I enjoyed the friendship of a Norwegian diplomat. He told me that Norway, at the beginning of last century was like Nicaragua - a very poor country. Today, following the UN’s Nov.2010 report, Norway is at the top of human development in the world, a “healthy, wealthy and wise” country. Why? Education.

Education is not a tangible value, it is not like a machine that you can see, but it is the key for any development. If the US doesn’t invest in education, we will see in the near future an increase in misery, poverty, and violence.

I was born to a rural family in El Salvador. We were eleven children, who experienced poverty. My mother pushed us to study, and we are now eight middle class professionals. Education has been the springboard for a life that we enjoy.José Chencho Alashttp://fssca.net/fssca/bio.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1982730621860282013.post-32709284224638210982010-12-17T19:21:09.419-05:002010-12-17T19:21:09.419-05:00For a while, African American males in education h...For a while, African American males in education has been in a sad state of affairs. But there is hope. My dissertation highlights the phenomenon that some African Americans who score low on the SAT and are, therefore, predicted to not succeed academically in college, may in fact have a high success motivation. Those who do succeed tend to have a life purpose and a strong self-motivation to fulfill that purpose, despite the predictions, when they are surrounded by a network of encouragers, enroll in a harmonious college environment, and possess a healthy self-image and strong work ethic that allows them to forge ahead and develop the maturity and effective study strategies to succeed academically. Students such as these are determined not to fall prey to the negative statistics but to join the honored ranks of successful African Americans.

African Americans would do well to take initiative well before entering college by focusing on identifying their life purpose and then looking for professionals in that area to serve as mentors for guidance and encouragement. We can help them with this. Young students need to meet more role models who demonstrate the results of self-motivation and will convey their journey of success.EarlDarlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09807779568522232219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1982730621860282013.post-67908214606919587022010-12-15T15:53:37.864-05:002010-12-15T15:53:37.864-05:00As a mother of a 10 year old son. My mission is to ensure that he is afforded the Opportunity to Learn and going through the middle school process in NYC has highlighted the slim pickens available for quality middle schools, in both charter and traditional district public schools.

Thank you Pedro and the Schott Foundation (John Jackson)for holding up the issues but more importantly keeping the conversation alive about how to make a difference.

I will follow this interactive Black Boys Report and use it as a guide both personally with my own son and in work. I also promise to spread the word about it.

"Education is the One Thing No One Can Take Away from You"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
